Hockey Children’s Books With Literacy Extension Ideas

Are you looking for some Hockey children’s books to use in your classroom that include literacy extension ideas?  This list may be just what you are looking for!

Hockey is a wonderful theme and is filled with some exciting literacy experiences to explore.  You may have had the opportunity to read some of these Hockey books already, but hopefully some will be a new adventure for you and your kids.    Whether you like or dislike Hockey, try these engaging books and some of the extension activities suggested.

1. Goodnight Hockey by Michael Dahl

4. Hockey Morning, Noon and Night by Doretta Groenendyk

This colorful picture book is based on the author’s seven-year-old son and his capacity to incorporate hockey into all that he does.  This includes eating, drawing, music, visits with friends, sleeping and stories.

This book has playful watercolor and ink images of characters and scenes, sometimes three or four to a page.  It has no complete backgrounds, but just light-hearted visual vignettes that enhance the verse with humor and coziness. It will be an approachable book for kids, and heart-warming for any adult involved in hockey culture.

5. It’s Hockey Season by Jayne J. Jones

It’s Hockey Season tells the tale of two brothers, Blaine and Cullen, who love ice hockey and each other. Cullen is the all-star team captain and his brother Blaine, who has Down syndrome, is the team manager.

Blaine is clearly the unsung hero of the team; his leadership and unselfish actions speak louder than words. Young readers are able to learn respect and a better understanding for the challenges individuals with special needs face on a daily basis.

6. Score! My First Hockey Game by Tanner Ryan

This fun, informative, and action-packed illustrated sports book for children features the game of the the Penguins vs. the Otters! Each page introduces hockey terms, gear, players, and referees within the context of the story of a 3-period game between all-animal teams.

Read along as the two teams face off, flick the puck across the ice, check each other safely and even get penalties. Who’s going to win? It will all be decided by a last-minute power play!

7. Dino-Hockey by Lisa Wheeler

In a hockey match unrivaled in prehistory, the Meat-Eaters take on the Veggiesaurs. Fans go wild in the stands as T. Rex and Triceratops face off, and the game is off to a rip-roaring start. An assist from Raptor gains the first goal for the Meat-Eaters, but the naughty Pterodactyl twins, playing wingers, earn their team a penalty.

You’ll have a front row seat, so keep an eye on Raptor. Hockey gets him pretty riled up and that’s quite a set of teeth he’s baring. Will the plant-eaters become the champions? 8. It’s Hockey Time, Franklin by Jason Cooper

When Franklin accepts Charlie Brown’s invitation to play hockey at the pond, the ace player doesn’t get the carefree afternoon he expects. First Peppermint Patty refuses to share the ice. Then a rival group of kids try to claim the pond for themselves.

It looks like Franklin will never get to skate, until he brainstorms a brilliant play to please everyone. With Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty, Lucy, and Snoopy on his side, he challenges the rival kids in a winner-take-all game of hockey. If Franklin’s team wins, the pond belongs to everyone.
