Cookies Children’s Books With Literacy Extension Ideas

Are you looking for some Cookies children’s books to use in your classroom that include literacy extension ideas?  This list may be just what you are looking for!

Cookies of any kind are a wonderful theme and are filled with some exciting literacy experiences to explore.  You may have had the opportunity to read some of these Cookie books already, but hopefully some will be a new adventure for you and your kids.    Whether you like or dislike Cookies, try these engaging books and some of the extension activities suggested.

1. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie y Laura Numeroff

If a hungry little traveler shows up at your house, you might want to give him a cookie. If you give him a cookie, he’s going to ask for a glass of milk. He’ll want to look in a mirror to make sure he doesn’t have a milk mustache, and then he’ll ask for a pair of scissors to give himself a trim.

The consequences of giving a cookie to this energetic mouse run the young host ragged, but readers of all ages will come away smiling at the antics that tumble like dominoes through the pages of this delightful picture book.

2. The Cookie Fiasco by Dan Santat

Four friends. Three cookies. One problem.

3. May I Have a Cookie by Jennifer E. Morris

Alfie learns that the best way to get a delicious cookie is to say please! Alfie loves his mommy’s cookies, and he wants one more than anything! But grabbing for one, fishing for one, and dressing up as a cookie inspector don’t seem to work.

His mommy says there is a better way. What is it? Beginning readers will learn proper manners with Alfie as his mommy teaches him to say the magic words.

4. Mr. Cookie Baker by Katie Van Camp

As sweet and satisfying as holiday baking, here is a beautiful update of Monica Wellington’s Mr. Cookie Baker. In this book, youngsters can follow the process of measuring, mixing, baking, decorating, and eating cookies.

This book is a perfect supplement to early math units on sequencing, sorting, measuring, and telling time. The simple, straightforward behind-the-scenes view of a bakery makes it a splendid read. Yummy in any season!

5. Who Took the Cookie From the Cookie Jar by Bonnie Lass

This text is a fun adaptation of the classic playground song. Help Skunk solve the mystery as he asks each of his animal friends, Mouse, Raven, Squirrel, Rabbit, Turtle, Raccoon, Snake, Beaver, and Frog, who took the cookie from the cookie jar?

The title page shows Skunk taking cookies out of an oven, but by the first page of the story, the cookie jar is empty. Accompanied by Lizard, he ventures out into a desert landscape accusing, in turn, a number of animals of taking his baked goods.

6. Fortune Cookie Fortunes by Grace Lin

The main character, an anonymous young Chinese girl, believes that all the fortunes in the cookies will come true. The reader follows each member of her family to see how their fortunes are fulfilled.

Crack, crack, crack! The cookies snap open, and the family’s fortunes are revealed. Mei Mei wants to know how hers will come true. Jie Jie scoffs that they never come true. But Pacy isn’t so sure.

As she waits and watches, she notices magical things happening in her family. Could the fortunes really be right? And what about Pacy’s “You will see the world in a new way”? Well, yes, it’s true! Pacy has been seeing the world through fortune cookies!

7. Cookie Count by Robert Sabuda
